Protect Your Furniture and Other Items from Possible Damage

Too often people take chances with their furniture and other possessions during an interior painting project. Even the best professional interior painter will appreciate a customer who takes reasonable steps to help ensure a successful outcome.

Steps To Declutter And Protect Your Furniture Before Interior Painting

First, to protect your things during the painting process you should declutter items such as photos, ornaments, keepsakes, and collectables. It’s usually best to clear off the surfaces in the room that the professional painters will be working around. This reduces the risk of breakages and of items falling.

The second thing you can do is protect your furniture. Any smaller pieces like side tables, coffee tables and lamps should be moved into another room during painting. Larger pieces should be covered securely with protective cloths. Larger pieces should also, where possible, be moved in advance to allow painters easy access to the surfaces they will be painting.

Cleaning and Repairing Walls Before Painting

Paint will adhere best to a surface that is clean and smooth. You can speed the painting process by repairing any uneven areas on the surface to be painted ahead of time. This might include patching holes or dents with a filler made for that purpose. You’ll achieve the best results by allowing the filler to fully dry and then using fine sandpaper to achieve a flat, smooth surface.

Once the above is complete, you must clean the surfaces that will be painted, as well as those around them. Professionals insist on painting a clean surface, not only because the paint adheres better to the surface, but also because it avoids dirt and debris getting into the paint while it's wet, resulting in a better finish. If this has not been done in advance then the painter may charge for the additional preparation work.
